The Sonoma County Office of Education, located in Santa Rosa, conducts hearings in which parents of children attending the districts’ schools have the opportunity to present the request for their child )in this case change of school for child) in front of the five members of the Board of Education. By the day of the hearing, the case had already been presented to the Board, so at the hearing the parents will only say brief remarks. The Board asks a question or two for precision and that’s it. Then the Board takes a 5 min pause to deliberate, parents and interpreter return to the chambers and decision is given.
The parents of the child speak Mandarin, therefore the need for an interpreter who will translate the interactions between Board members and parents (only one parent is allowed to speak).
