About The RoleWe are seeking qualified School Interpreters to support communication between families, students, and school staff in educational settings in the Boston area for IN PERSON meetings. Candidates must meet the Massachusetts DESE School Interpreter Training Framework qualifications for Tier 2 or Tier 3.Core Competencies (Required For All Interpreters)All interpreters must demonstrate the essential competencies required at Tier 1 (Language Ambassador):Understanding of the interpreter’s role in school environmentsAwareness of professional boundaries and dual-role limitationsKnowledge of ethics, confidentiality, and standards of practiceStrong cultural competency and ability to navigate cultural differencesTier 2 Interpreter RequirementsQualified for general school assignments.Must Meet All Tier 1 Requirements PlusMinimum age: 18Advanced spoken proficiency in English and another languageCompletion of a DESE-approved Tier 2 Interpreter Training ProgramSkilled in consecutive interpretingFamiliarity with general education terminologyTier 3 Interpreter RequirementsQualified for specialized or legally significant school meetings (e.g., IEP meetings, disciplinary hearings, ELE placement).Must Meet Tier 1 And Tier 2 Requirements PlusCompletion of DESE-approved Tier 3 coursework focused on special education terminologyKnowledge of terminology used in specialized or legal school meetings50 hours of interpreting practice in specialized meetings, including feedback from a trained interpreter on an encounter of at least 30 minutesInterim Tier 3 status may be granted for interpreters who have completed coursework and demonstrated skills but are still accumulating required experienceEnglish Proficiency Requirements (DESE-Approved Pathways)Candidates may demonstrate advanced English proficiency through one or more of the following:High school diploma or equivalent from an English-speaking countryCompletion of 24+ post-secondary credit hours with coursework conducted in EnglishSeal of Biliteracy (English)Passing score on a recognized English proficiency exam (e.g., ACTFL, TOEFL, IELTS)Certification from a professional interpreter training program (medical, court, or similar)Target Language Proficiency RequirementsCandidates must demonstrate advanced proficiency in the language they interpret through one or more of the following:High school diploma or equivalent taught in the target languageCompletion of 24+ post-secondary credit hours with coursework conducted in the target languageSeal of Biliteracy in the target languagePassing score on a recognized language proficiency exam (e.g., ACTFL or other DESE-approved tests)Certification from an interpreter training program in the target languageAccepted Proficiency AssessmentsDESE Accepts Nationally Recognized Language Evaluations, Such AsACTFL (Advanced-Mid or higher)TOEFLIELTSOther DESE-approved assessmentsEquivalent benchmarks across testing systems will be considered.How To ApplyPlease submit your résumé and details about your DESE training, language proficiency testing, and Tier level (Tier 2 or Tier 3).
