To quote a popular saying at TNC, “you’ll join for the mission, and you’ll stay for the people.”What We Can Achieve TogetherThe Spanish Translator will work closely with Biology Teacher and the Education Manager of Mashomack Preserve to teach the field and laboratory portions of the 2024 Summer Ecology and DNA Lab Experience (SEDLE) on Shelter Island, NY. The translator will work with students whose first language is not English to provide access to the experience. SEDLE is a two-week summer program and partnership between The Nature Conservancy at Mashomack and Shelter Island High School. The program will combine field exploration and collection at Mashomack with DNA lab studies using Shelter Island School’s well-equipped biology lab. Students will learn traditional identification techniques as they explore forest, field, freshwater, and saltwater ecosystems and will collect plant and animal samples and return to the SIHS biology lab to use state-of-the-art equipment to identify organisms. Transect studies will help students make predictions of climate change impacts to species. The duration of this position is two weeks: July 15-26, 2024. WE’RE LOOKING FOR YOU The Spanish Translator will be present at all times during the Summer Ecology and DNA Lab Experience. They will provide support and translation services for Spanish speaking students. They will also produce Spanish versions of needed data sheets and instructions. The translator’s presence will assist students who speak English as their second language and encourage their participation in the program.Topics To Be Translated Will Include Introduction to Lab techniques and DNA Barcoding. Documenting organisms Registration for DNA Subway and Cy/Verse Introduction to phylogenetic analysis Plant and invertebrate DNA Electrophoresis Invertebrate and Plant DNA subway analysis Guiding work on students’ final posters and presentationsWhat You’ll Bring BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and 1 year related experience in custodial and ecological land management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to converse fluently in both English and Spanish. Experience teaching in both field and classroom environments.
