Bilingual Science Communicator (Japanese and English)

As a Science Communicator, you will primarily be responsible for converting complex technical or scientific material (in English or Japanese) into easy-to-consume, effective, and engaging Japanese language content, such as plain-language summaries and news stories. In addition, you will be responsible for translating the English text in storyboards, scripts, infographics, posters, etc. into Japanese and in some cases reviewing Japanese voice-over/narration in videos.

Job Responsibilities

Content creation: Creation of Japanese ‘Research News Stories’, ‘Plain Language Summaries’, and similar textual content based on scientific manuscripts/material from across the STEM fields. This will involve understanding the manuscript/material and creating a content piece in Japanese from scratch.

Transcreation/translation: Translating/trans-creating* English audio-visual collateral (Infographic text, Video Summary scripts, Video Subtitles, etc.) into Japanese [*Note: ‘Transcreation’ refers to contextual translation rather than word-to-word translation. Transcreation would involve using accurate and appropriate scientific phrasing that makes sense to a Japanese audience].

Reviewing Japanese voice-over/narration: This involves reviewing videos with Japanese voice-over/narration or subtitles and ensuring accuracy in language and pronunciation as well as ensuring that the narration is synchronized with the content being shown.

While these points encompass our major services, we do many custom projects that require local language review. In general, your role would involve helping us with writing or reviewing Japanese in our various deliverables.

You can expect to receive work worth 15-20 hours per week.
