Job DescriptionBAERI’s mission is to enable a diverse set of world-class scientists and mission specialists to do groundbreaking research in Earth, environmental, and space science.Founded in 1993 and headquartered at the NASA Ames Research Park in Moffett Field, California, we are a scientist-founded research nonprofit that has supported over 350 researchers in the last 30 years and has partnered with dozens of organizations, including NASA, Stanford University, USGS, Protectores de Cuencas, and The University of Sydney. We are currently the organizational home for over 150 researchers.We are looking for a part-time, project-based writer to support our communications department while one of our team members is on leave. This is a six-month contract, with possible extension. The content you’ll be working with is wide-ranging and includes, but isn’t limited to, long-form narrative journalism, plain-language research summaries, short publicity pieces, and internal messaging. Examples of our work can be found on the News & Stories page of our website: https://baeri.org/news-stories.Responsibilities:Pitch and write pieces of a variety of length and depth that center on BAERI’s work. Collaborate with team members to select and prioritize story pitches from fellow writers. Assist in fact-checking new content. Act as second reader and periodic line-editor of colleagues’ work. Write and line edit text for intranet pages as well as periodic internal communications. Meet deadlines set by the communications team. Qualifications:Comfort writing in various styles and voices, ensuring ideas are communicated effectively to diverse audiences. ○ Ability to comprehend and translate complex concepts into plain-language summaries.○ Maintaining a clear and honest voice in all communications.○ Experience writing in the fields of space and Earth science or related disciplines is a plus, but not required.Interest in working collaboratively in a flat organizational structure, demonstrating respect for colleagues’ input and ideas. ○ Willingness to make adjustments to your writing according to editors’ notes.Strong command of the English language, meticulous attention to detail, and a passion for maintaining high editorial standards. Familiarity with and proficiency in using style manuals, such as the Chicago Manual of Style. Facility with Google Workspace. Experience with WordPress is a plus, but not required. Experience writing marketing copy is a plus, but not required.
