The General Service Office (G.S.O.) in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City employs approximately 85 individuals (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and serves over 2 million members in the US and Canada.Our mission at the G.S.O. is to support carrying the message of Alcoholics Anonymous to the still-suffering alcoholic by providing services to A.A. members, groups, and others; publishing and distributing A.A literature, preserving A.A. history, and sharing A.A.’s collective experience. Not only is our team incredibly mission-driven, but also tremendously supportive of each other as both colleagues and individuals.Job SummaryThe Spanish Translator/Editor is responsible for the translation of materials from English into Spanish. This role assists with the planning and coordination of day-to-day activities relating to the Spanish translation of all AA Conference-approved literature as well as staff resources, service materials, periodicals, and other AA materials produced by the General Service Office.ResponsibilitiesAssist the Director of Language Services and the Spanish Translation and Editing Contractor in scheduling, communicating, and executing translation priorities.Translate materials from English into Spanish for use at A.A. events, including website texts, reports, programs, press releases, Public Service Announcement scripts, activity updates, and memos from GSO. the General Service Office (GSO service desks, GSO. Archives, etc.Assist with the review of translated materials for accuracy and consistency according to G.S.O. style sheets and glossaries.Assist with the coordination of Spanish-language contractor editorial resources, including proofreading, editing, monitoring progress, and reviewing submitted work.Make effective use of relevant language technologies and tools.Perform Spanish to English translations.Perform other related duties as required.Required SkillsExcellent verbal and written communication skills, with knowledge of English and Spanish language, grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, and culture.Extensive knowledge of editing procedures and terminology; working knowledge of current typesetting and publishing practices.Ability to handle multiple projects at once.Excellent copyediting and proofreading skills in Spanish.Excellent -English-Spanish translation skills.Proactive attitude in learning and developing additional skills and knowledge relevant to the job.Fluency in English. Must be a native Spanish speaker.QualificationsAuthorized to work in the U.S.Bachelor’s degree in translation and/or language-related fields, or relevant work experience.Three to five years’ experience working as a professional translator and editorFamiliarity with translation memory software a plus.Knowledge of AA service structure a plus.Physical RequirementsAvailability to work in person a minimum of three days per week.Some weekend or evening work may be required during busy times, General Service Board weekends, or ConferenceAbility to sit at a desk for a 7-hour workday with breaks.Ability to use a computer including tasks such as typing and using software and the ability to read and interpret data on a computer screen for extended periods.Ability to work in an indoor office setting with controlled climate conditions.Tolerance to moderate noise levels typical of an office setting.LocationThis position is in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of New York City; we currently work a hybrid schedule of 3 days in office and 2 days remote.Pay & BenefitsThis is a salaried, exempt position with an annual pay rate of $75,000.A.A.W.S. offers outstanding health benefits including majority employer paid medical, dental, and vision, an employer-funded health reimbursement account, long- and short-term disability, and life insurance.
